| At the age of five, she was involved in a car accident that killed both her mother and her twin sister, Maya. At the time of her death, Maya's organs were preserved, and her corneas were later transplanted into Aya at the same time that a young girl named Melissa Pearce received one of Maya's kidneys. The transplants resulted in both girls receiving highly-evolved mitochondria from Maya, unbeknownst to anyone. Aya went on to become a detective with the NYPD 17th precinct. She became involved with the New York Blockade Incident in 1997, after attending a Christmas Eve performance at Carnegie Hall, in which Melissa Pearce was the lead role. During the show, Melissa's mitochondria "awakened" and Melissa underwent a transformation. She became a creature that called herself simply "Eve". Eve killed everyone in Carnegie Hall via spontaneous human combustion - all except Aya, who was immune to the effects due to the mitochondria in her own body. Aya discovered that not only did her mitochondria make her immune to Eve's effects, but that it was unable to take control of her as it did Melissa because of Aya's super-evolved nuclei keeping it in check. Furthermore, she also had power. Potentially dangerous power. "The more you use those powers, the more you become like me." After six days of hunting for Eve, and killing the new creatures she continuously spawned, an Aya engaged Eve in a showdown on Liberty Island. Eve was killed, as well as the Ultimate Being she planned to give birth to in order to unleash the newly-freed mitochondria, and Aya became a hero among the government ranks for her courageous acts. Few civilians are aware of the details of the event. |

At first glance, Aya Brea is all work and very little play. She typically comes off as aloof, blunt, and fairly unapproachable. In most situations, save for those that hit very close to home, Aya is usually very calm, cool, and collected. Overall, she has no time for games or flirtations -- it's all about the job, thank you very much. Having always stuck out like a sore thumb, having Asian features but very Caucasian coloring due to her mixed-heritage, Aya continuously strives to be at the top of her game. Even moreso, when she began working in a male-dominated field. Because of this, Aya works very hard to do her best at whatever she may pursue, at the same time trying to blend in with the crowd. Nothing makes Aya feel more uncomfortable than being put in the spotlight. Furthermore, she keeps herself rather guarded, trusting very few people with information about herself. Her newly-arising mitochondrial powers -- particularly the pyrokinetic one, and her inability to physically age -- set her aside from nearly anyone, and the last thing Aya wants to do is let everyone know how different she Even deeper, Aya has a soft spot for children, particularly those in situations similar to her own. She knows what it's like to grow up without a parent, and she knows what it's like to grow up being different. Despite keeping herself so guarded, Aya is always willing to offer a helping hand to anyone who may be in trouble; to those close to her, she remains fiercely loyal to, and would go to the ends of the earth for them. Call it the ingrown need to protect and serve. |
